West Wight Activities

Isle of Wight Walking FestivalSailing near YarmeouthCycling along the River Yar

The West Wight is great for the outdoors. There are many excellent walks along the coast and in the countryside and for the more active there is good swimming, fishing and snorkeling at Freshwater Bay. There is good surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing at nearby Compton Bay. Mountain biking and horse riding over the numerous bridleways on the downs is accessible from The apartment without going on a metalled road. Paragliding and hang gliding are popular on the cliffs at Afton Down. Boats can be launched from the slipway at Freshwater Bay and the yachting centre of Yarmouth is only a 5 minute drive.

In fact within a mile of the Studio Apartment there are recognised areas for walking, cycling, mountain biking, swimming, snorkling, diving, fishing, surfing, sailing, windsurfing, paragliding, kite surfing, golf, horse riding, bird watching and nude sunbathing!

There are also numerous attractions for children with clean, safe beaches and a wealth of countryside to explore on fine days, and places like the Dinosaur Museum and adventure parks like Blackgang Chine and Robin Hill when the weather doesn't cooperate.

Beach at ComptonIf that all sounds a bit too hectic there are the beaches . . .

The beach at Freshwater Bay is a combination of pebbles and sand and has wonderful rockpools with crabs and small fish which has kept generations of small children amused for hours and is very sheltered from the prevailing wind. Compton Bay is the Island's surf beach and is about 5 minutes by car. Big surf is rare in the summer months but there is lots of sand at low tide on this long unspoilt beach. Great for picnics and BBQs. More sheltered and busier is another sandy beach, Colwell Bay, which is about 10 minutes by car. Here there is a promenade, cafes, beach huts and lots of families and children.
