Freshwater and the West Wight

Freshwater bay from Compton in the West WightFreshwater is an ideal holiday location if you enjoy the outdoor life. With one coast facing the English Channel and Atlantic Ocean and the other facing the Solent and the mainland the West Wight has a very different atmosphere to the busier eastern side of the Island. Landmarks include Freshwater Bay, The Needles, Tennyson Down, Fort Victoria, Alum Bay Cliffs and Yarmouth Castle but there are other places like Newtown Creek - an unspoilt haven for wildlife, Hannover Point with it's dinosaur footprints on the rocks, the ancient standing stones at Mottistone and Hulverstone and beaches ranging from safe and sandy to wild and rocky!

The West Wight is well known for its numerous footpaths and bridleways and has an annual Walking Festival every spring and the Cycling Festival in the Autumn. From the Studio Apartment the cliff tops are only minutes away with walks over Tennyson Down to the Needles or along the River Yar to Yarmouth.

One way to see this corner of the Island is on the Needles Tour topless bus. Running every half hour in season it begins at Yarmouth and does a circuit encompassing Afton Park, Freshwater Bay, the Needles, Alum Bay, Totland and Fort Victoria. Buy a round ticket and get on and off as often as you like.
